For some time the robust tenor saxophone sound of Yuri Honing has been known in Holland and far beyond. He’s one of those Dutch musicians whose interests in music don’t stop at the borders of their native country. With his group The Oriënt Express Honing succeeds in bringing together various musical cultures in a exciting way. This collective came into existence while travelling through the Middle-East. The trio (with bassist Tony Overwater and drummer Joost Lijbaart) toured the Lebanon, Jordan and Syria and the musicians became fascinated by Arabian music. An encounter with singer Rima Khcheich led to a spontaneous performance in Beirut. Later the ‘djoze’ player Basem Havar and percussionist Latif Al-Obaidy joined them. At first sight jazz and Arabian music may not have much in common, but shared passion, virtuosity a space for improvisation offer enough starting points. Live, Oriënt Express searches to find a fusion between both musical cultures, a search that yields beautiful music.
