With the prestigious Thelonious Monk Award for Composition in his hip-pocket Ilja Reijngoud has made himself conspicuous. He doesn’t only give workshops and clinics, but also teaches jazz trombone at, and leads the big band of, the Rotterdam Conservatory. Meanwhile he composes and arranges for the most divergent line-ups. Recently he was appointed to be trombonist of the Brussels Jazz Orchestra, the band where he already substituted for colleagues. Reijngoud graduated ‘cum laude’ at the Hilversum Conservatory and plays in several bands including the Dutch Jazz Orchestra, the Houdini’s, the Cubop City Bigband, the Pierre Courbois Dubbelkwintet and Canta Brasil. With the Ilja Reijngoud Quartet he has conquered his own terrain in the jazz landscape. Especially for the North Sea Jazz Festival Reijngoud has formed a collective of six trombonists around his quartet. The band plays wayward compositions that could be described as ‘modern global vanguard jazz’.
