The Netherlands can boast many talented, well-educated jazz musicians. Many of them play in a host of small bands. For a long time Holland lacked a large orchestra that, in the tradition of the American big bands, played its own repertoire on a high level. In 1996 the Jazz Orchestra of the Concertgebouw was founded (first named New Concert Big Band) by pianist/arranger Henk Meutgeert, bassist Frans van Geest and drummer Hans Dekker. In 1999 the band teamed up with the Concertgebouw in Amsterdam. The Orchestra became the ‘house band’ of the great hall and subsequently was called Jazz Orchestra of the Concertgebouw. The Orchestra, which has developed into one of the best and most important jazz orchestras in Holland, is characterized by an enormous productivity. The orchestra doesn’t restrict itself to accompanying famous artists, but also release their own CD’s with original music.
