On her new album Flor De Amor Omara Portuondo goes all the way back to the romantic era of ‘felin’, the mix of Afro-Cuban, Latin and vocal jazz. And Omara is the perfect guide to take us on that trip. She is one of the most colourful and famous singers of Cuba. For years in a row she was the ‘front woman’ of the famous Cuban revue ensemble Tropicana and the legendary Orquesta Aragon. And, last but not least: she is the only woman in the Buena Vista Social Club, the company that is, once again, responsible for the production of her album. It was three years ago today that Omara shone at North Sea Jazz for the last time – and how we missed her, this senior vocalist who, rightfully, is called a living legend. She passionately sings about the tragedies of love that got lost and does that with a befitting sob in her voice. And she keeps on shining ….beautifully.
