The Blindfold Test is one of the regular – and one of the most enjoyable – features of the American jazz magazine DownBeat. Well-known jazz musicians get to hear a number of jazz songs without knowing the nature of the recording or who is playing. The interviewed musician has to guess which selection he is listening to. The blindfolded has to know what’s what: the title of the song, the band members, the soloists, the period and so forth. Further more the songs are selected with the featured guest in mind, an approach that, more often than not, yields heartily told anecdotes! At the North Sea Jazz Festival DownBeat journalist Paul De Barros submits a mystery guest to this interesting Blindfold Test. The results will also be published in DownBeat.
