The renowned trumpeter and flugelhornist Hugh Masekela from the now legendary Sophia Township will play at the festival with the British ska and jazz big band Jazz Jamaica All Stars, starring today’s big names including Soweto Kich and Denys Baptiste, who will also perform with their own bands. Masekela’s imaginative compositions, that resound resistance and the cry for freedom, mix superbly with the overpowering sound of the 21-piece big band of bassist Gary Crosby. Ska and reggae classics mingle with Afro-jazz. Masekela is perhaps the best-known and most respected jazz musician that South-Africa has ever produced. He collaborated with many international artists, including Dizzy Gillespie and Harry Belafonte. Masekela had played in many South-African jazz bands before he, in 1961, had to go into exile in the United States, where he subsequently emerged himself in R&B, pop and fusion music. But his African roots, the music he heard as a little boy in the slums of Witbank and also the powerful sound of jazz greats like Kippie Moeketsi, will never be out of earshot.
