After years of playing in bands with bigger line-ups like The Houdini’s and Corrie en de Brokken, Angelo Verploegen was yearning for a smaller, more intimate formation. In the trio Verploegen, Verhoeff & Van der Westen he is able to develop other possibilities to play on both flugelhorn and muted trumpet – supported by super guitarist Ed Verhoeff (Baseline, EDition) and the solid bass player Eric van der Westen (Quadrant, Paul van Kemenade). The emphasis of this trio without drums lies on the acoustic merging of the sounds of flugelhorn, acoustic guitar and double bass. The trio’s crystal clear musical structures leave a lot of space for intuition and improvisation. The VV&W repertoire is provided by the band members themselves. They also hark back to songs from the Great American Songbook in a playful way.
