The collaboration of international jazz greats with the Koninklijke Conservatorium Big Band has become a fine tradition. Last year the conservatory band performed with trombone player and arranger Slide Hampton. This year the orchestra will play with the one and only Kenny Wheeler, trumpeter and flugelhornist. Wheeler can also be found in the duo project 1+1, during which he will perform with pianist Fred Hersch. De Koninklijke Conservatorium Big Band dates from the end of the seventies, when pianist and arranger Frans Elsen conducted the orchestra. Since then the big band performed with established names like Benny Carter, Rob Pronk, Gerald Wilson, Bob Mintzer, Maria Schneider and Jim McNeely. The Jazz Department of the Koninklijk Conservatorium, that was founded in 1979, is a direct descendent of the big band.
