It took some time before the wayward and slightly underground bassist Me’shell Ndegeocello made herself heard again. Her most recent solo album Cookie: The Anthropological Mixtape dates from 2002. After that she did some extended touring and took long pauses to stimulate her creativity. The Spirit Music Sextet is her most musical group project to date. Alas we have to do without her low pitched singing voice, in this project there’s only room for her bass guitar. But she does claim the musical leadership of this grooving band that combines jazz and funk from the seventies with modern influences. Together with reed player and flautist Ron Blake, tenor saxophonist Oliver Lake, pianist Michael Cain, drummer Chris Dave and DJ Jahi Sundance she explores and pushes her boundaries in an audible way – and all this will certainly lead to an exciting concert.
