Those who call Maria Schneider the most important woman in jazz are wrong: Schneider happens to be one of the most important composers of this and last century, full stop. After her studies had become one big triumph, she became Gil Evans’ – the man behind Porgy and Bess and Sketches of Spain, two masterpieces by Miles Davis - personal assistant in 1885. Five years in a row she performed at Visione’s, a club in Greenwich Village, with her own Jazz Orchestra. Subsequently she composed and arranged for almost every orchestra and festival in Europe and the rest of the world. Having played at North Sea Jazz before with the Brussels Jazz Orchestra, this year she’ll present the talented Danish Radio Big Band, one of those fantastic orchestras that make it possible for Schneider’s music to resound. This concert has no less than two special guests: the master harmonica player Jean ‘Toots’ Thielemans and the Brazilian star singer Ivan Lins, the artist that during this festival will also perform with Josee Konings.
