The talented bass player Ben Allison is a natural musical leader who approaches the music in a completely original and authentic way. He feels comfortable in avant-garde music, but doesn’t shy away from straight ahead jazz. Last year two of his projects could be heard at this festival: the Herbie Nichols Project with the Jazz Composers Collective and Peace Pipe. This year he’ll present the progressive collective Medicine Wheel featuring the saxophonists Ted Nash and Michael Blake, with whom he has just completed the album Buzz. The Indian medicine wheel functions as a symbol for life, leaving room for both nature and man and his thoughts. The Medicine Wheel band is inspired by this idea. Like a spinning, musical wheel the band turns out creative improvisations with exciting rhythms and melodies that fuse into a musical collage.
