Ljiljana Buttler was born in Belgrado, former Yugoslavia. Her mother was a singer and her father an accordion virtuoso, but, as it is more often than not in marriages between musicians the relationship didn’t hold up. Ljiljana often accompanied her mother to performances and knew her repertoire by heart. That came in handy when her mother fell ill one night and Ljiljana had to fill in for her. Thus the twelve-year-old made her debut. When her mother abandoned her a year later, Ljiljana made money for her keep and education by singing. She developed her reputation as the “Mother of Gypsy Soul”, named after her 2002 CD that marked her festive comeback after a mysterious absence of 15 years. From that moment on she was reunited with the best known Balkan band from Bosnia-Herzegovina the Mostar Sevdah Reunion led by Ilijaz Delic.
