Sanne van Hek is one of the newcomers at the festival. This young talent has tried her hand at many instruments. She played the clarinet and the saxophone when she started studying bass guitar and double bass at the Conservatory of Tilburg. Thanks to a scholarship she had the chance to study bass guitar at the well-known Berklee School of Music in Boston. And now she plays the trumpet and graduated at Conservatory of Amsterdam. Last year Van Hek won the Dordtse Jazz Prize and was praised for her qualities as a soloist, arranger and band leader. She spent the money of that prize on a CD in her own name. The trumpeter makes an impression in a trio including Frans van der Hoeven and John Engels. Next to free improv, she tackles pieces by Ornette Coleman, Thelonious Monk and traditional standards.
