In his compositions guitarist Marc van Vugt combines his experience in jazz and improv with contemporary, composed music. He composes for many ensembles but especially for his own bands (Big) Bizar Habit and Vandoorn, the duo he has formed with singer/pianist Ineke van Doorn. In both groups he also plays the guitar. Marc van Vugt's Big Bizar Habit is a 11-piece ensemble with musicians who have established themselves on the borderline between classical and improv music. Last year Van Vugt lived in the Van Doesburghuis in Paris, formerly the studio of the painter and founder of the art movement De Stijl Theo van Doesburg. Inspired by his surroundings he composed a suite for his band called Different Shades Of Gray-Van Doesburgh Suite. At the festival he will also play pieces from Big Bizar Habit/Strings Only. Het Brabant Dagblad schreef: “Contrasts like these make a man happy. And there are a lot of them. Sometimes they hurt, but most of the time they give pleasure – like in Marc van Vugt’s Big Bizar Habit, where strings both befriend and provoke the horns.”
