The Los Angeles Times called him ‘one of the leading pianists of the world’ and the magazine Jazz Weekly topped this by characterising him as ‘the most lyrical pianist of our time’. Kenny Barron, because that’s the man we’re talking about, may consider himself to be a lucky man. At the beginning of the sixties this Philadelphia born piano player already had such a big reputation that trumpeter Dizzy Gillespie hired him without having heard one note of his playing. It was during his stay with Gillespie that Barron developed his talent for latin flavoured rhythms. After five years of Gillespie the jazz world was at his feet and he played with almost all the jazz greats of the world. The recordings he made with Stan Getz just before the death of this tenor saxophonist brought together the two most lyrical voices of jazz for eternity.
