There are success stories that are just too spectacular to be true. Yuri Buenaventura’s is one of them. He got his Christian name from the astronaut Youri Gagarin and his family name from his native town in Colombia. He left his country for France to study economics, but soon ended up in the Paris salsa scene. He started singing in the Grupo Caïman and quit studying. Then he joined the Orquestra Chaworo, a band that increased his fame. But Buenaventura had other plans. He wanted to record a solo album. He returned to Colombia, but instead of recording a CD, he went bankrupt. Meanwhile his version of Ne Me Quitte Pas became a hit – and, eventually, the first gold salsa record in France.
