Louis Sclavis is one of the most talented clarinettists in the world of free jazz and avant-garde. Although his technical prowess is enormous, he never allows those skills to take over his music. His playing is clear and precise. Sclavis started playing the clarinet in various marching bands. His zest for playing moved him to attend the Conservatory of Lyon. After his studies he started a career that would be rewarded with the Prix Django Reinhardt for the best jazz musician of the year. At North Sea Jazz he will play with another French jazz icon: reed player Michel Portal. Portal is considered to be the patriarch of French jazz. The classically trained Portal most of all obtained fame for his collaborations with famous composers like Pierre Boulez. His contribution as a soloist to Boulez composition Domaines still ranks among the highlights of his career.
