Even before she has arrived, her presence at North Sea Jazz has already become legendary. The Lady of Soul Patti LaBelle has never sung at this festival. The singer, who was born as Patti Holt, like so many learned how to use her voice in a church choir. She had the first modest successes with the group Patti LaBelle and the Blue Bells, the band she recorded some songs with in the sixties. It wasn’t until the group changed its name and musical course that the big success arrived. With hits like Lady Marmalade ánd their extravagant glam outfits the ladies put themselves on the musical soul map. Patti LaBelle also had a very successful solo career. She recorded platinum albums and wrote her autobiography. Recently she released another album Timeless Journey. LaBelle has a warm, rich tone. And to top all that, she and her trunk full of golden hits have been an inspiration for many young singers.
