Singer Al Jarreau is not to be imitated. If there is one man who can play with his voice it's him. He's an outstanding vocal stylist, who also writes beautiful songs. Further more he refused to be pigeonholed into one musical genre. Apparently effortlessly this vocal athlete combines jazz with soul, funk, gospel and African singing. As long as it swings, Jarreau knows how to deal with it. The singer can look back on a shining career that allowed him to pick up a total of five Grammys. On his CD All I Got he proved that he still has a lot of ideas. This becomes more than clear on his latest album Accentuate the Positive, that introduces the listener to a completely different Jarreau backed up by a quartet. Gone are the sweet strings and backing vocals: it's time for live sessions with accomplished arrangements of classic jazz standards.
