Michiel Borstlap doesn’t like to be pigeonholed, and that’s typical of his generation. That’s why one day he can be found in the company of avant-garde drummer Han Bennink, and the next day with deejay Ronald Molendijk. With his sextet he gave a modern twist to the hardbop idiom, his electric formation continued where Weather Report left off and he tackles standards on a recently released solo cd. He joins efforts with Martijn Barkhuis, a.k.a. DJ Maestro, who focuses on black dance music (jazz, funk and soul). He put together the Blue Note Trip compilations, and was given carte blanche to select material from the delicate Blue Note back catalogue. The nights he was spinning at Club Bitterzoet, where Borstlap was one of his guests, were always packed.
