Pianist Fred Hersch is gifted with both a robust and romantic touch. He has proved to be an excellent soloist, but he also established a reputation as a sideman in the bands of Stan Getz, Joe Henderson, Art Farmer and Toots Thielemans. He always searches for new challenges, without avoiding any obstacle and prefers to play in different settings. Recently he and his trio came up with a new album, Fred Hersch Trio + 2. During this festival we’ll hear him with both this band and in a duo with Kenny Wheeler, the man who hasn’t been in The Hague for a long time. This veteran of the trumpet, who can boast a wide range and a velvet tone, is equally at home in scorching free jazz and in somewhat softer, lyrical post-bop explorations. He established a name for himself as a solo-artist with his recordings for ECM and was also a member of the Dave Holland Quintet.
