The presence of the Dutch rhythm ‘n blues band Barrelhouse is not purely coincidental: in 2004 the group happens to celebrate its 30th anniversary. Their first gig was in 1974 and in the 10 years to follow Barrelhouse released an outstanding album every year. The blues has existed for more than a hundred years now and has changed since it came into existence. But the core has remained the same. Just like the sound of Barrelhouse, a sound that by far and large is determined by the characteristic voice of Tineke Schoemaker. Their latest two CD’s Timeframes (‘98) and Walking in Time (‘02) are illuminated by guest appearances of the Five Blind Boys of Mississippi, Altai Hangai and guitarist Gary Lucas. These divergent guest musicians are, as it were, employed to enrich the Barrelhouse sound without changing the band’s own identity.
