In 1985 drummer Jeff Hamilton decided together with bassist John Clayton and his saxophone playing brother Jeff Clayton to form Clayton-Hamilton Jazz Orchestra. The big band, an all star line up consisting of musicians from L.A., received a warm welcome from the public and their debut album Groove Shop was considered one of the best CD's of the year. Hamilton grew up between the big band records of his parents and was only eight when he started drumming to the records of Oscar Peterson. John Clayton's bio could be summarised in one sentence: he studied with Ray Brown. Need we say more? Jeff Clayton paid his dues as a studio musician, but has grown to be an essential part of the Clayton-Hamilton Jazz Orchestra machine. The orchestra was recently voted Big Band of the Year by the influential Downbeat Magazine.
