The 28-year-old pianist Jason Moran has developed a totally personal style, and that’s something else these days. He’s a true original who has mastered all techniques and his expressionism and unbridled energy has caught the attention of many jazz lovers. His breakthrough came when he joined Greg Osby’s band and since then he played with Cassandra Wilson, Steve Coleman and Stefon Harris. His album Modernistic was no less than great. Moran presented himself as a solo artist in a colourful collection of songs (varying from romantic ballads to abstract improvisation) that showcased the remarkable talents of this pianist. Now Moran sets the world on fire with his innovative trio The Bandwagon, a band that has a live CD out now that was recorded in the New York jazz club The Village Vanguard. The repertoire, again, is a mixed batch: from Jaki Byard via Björk to Brahms.
