On Arsenio drummer/percussionist Lucas van Merwijk and his Cubop City Big Band handled pieces by the legendary Arsenio Rodriguez. With eyes closed you can imagine yourself in a Cuban nightclub in a fifties-setting, where numerous couples dance their dance of love. Arsenio Rodriguez, one of the most important people in Cuban music history, thus posthumously inspires the Cubop City Big Band in such a way that it lifts itself to a higher plane. Rodriguez' innovative pieces, that reshaped Latin dance music by introducing the congas, push Van Merwijk and his extended band to the limit. Conga, bongo and trés too cleverly thrust, while the arrangements for horns change between improvisation and nostalgia.
