Doors opened worldwide for Dutch pianist, composer and band-leader Michiel Borstlap after winning the prestigious Monk Award for his composition Memory of Enchantment. Especially when sax player Wayne Shorter and pianist Herbie Hancock recorded the winning piece on their duo-CD 1 + 1. Borstlap is someone who has transcended all cubicles, which is typical for his generation. He can just as easily play with an avant-gardist like Han Bennink as with Dutch top-DJ Ronald Molendijk. He gives a modern twist to the hardbop-idiom with his sextet and his electronic formation goes beyond the legendary Weather Report. In connection with the Artist in Residence-project he accompanies American star-guitarist Pat Metheny with his Electric Band and the Solis String Quartet. Though accompany: knowing Borstlap he will probably take it a little further than that.
