Swing without any equal, unlimited caprices and a stage-act bordering on that of English comedian Tommy Cooper: these are all elements in the always-lurching body of Dutch top drummer Han Bennink. Bennink was one of the iconoclasts who broke down the bebop-establishment in the sixties. As a member of the Instant Composers Pool he and pianist Misha Mengelberg were one of the most important exponents of the new order. Bennink doesn't only drum with sticks and brushes on drums, but uses everything he sees in sight. Indoor plants, parts of floors, pieces of a garden-hose, funnels and toys: nothing is safe for this enfant terrible of Dutch jazz. His performance with Artist in Residence Pat Metheny will surely be surprising.
