Once in a while, funkateer Maceo Parker releases a new CD, which means high-quality steaming, honking and sweltering. This also goes for the recently released Made By Maceo, which includes soulful ballads and sturdy, up-tempo pieces. Once again, Parker has surrounded himself with born musicians like James Brown-trumpet Ron Tooley and former P-funk bass player Rodney 'Skeet' Curtis, while Candy Dulfer also blows a few strapping solos. There is no doubt that the smartly dressed Parker, with his recognizable and infectious music - in his words: '2% jazz, 98% funk' - will get the party started in the Statenhal. The sax player represents a higher class of funk. Gaining fame as one of James Brown's best brass players (forming the JB-Horns with Pee Wee Ellis and Fred Wesley) in the sixties and seventies, Maceo's unmistakable sound can be heard on the first big hits Papa's Gotta Brand New Bag, Lickin' Stick and Cold Sweat. “Maceo, I want you to blow your horn!”, James Brown was known to shout in those days. Later he worked with funk adepts such as Bootsy Collins and George Clinton. As a soloist Parker is seen as an example to many sax players.
