After twenty-five years Jay Beckenstein, sax player and leader of the band Spyro Gyra, suddenly was fed up with it. For jazz journalists and critics had never understood the music of his band the way it was meant to be. Only the fans could distinguish the truth in the firm foundations of the music that had only little to do with the smooth jazz that is maliciously suggested about his band. The latter may be seen from the fact that the 2001 album In Modern Times was the Billboard Contemporary Jazz Album Chart for at least sixty-four weeks, with a second place as highest quotation. In preparation of the new album Original Cinema Beckenstein decided to develop a different working method. He did not look for the sounds his audience loves to hear, but ventured into new and experimental concepts. The final result supported his convictions that not just a new audience, but the old fans would all find this material fantastic.
