Searing Quartet was founded in 1995 at the Conservatory of Maastricht by pianist Egbert Derix and saxophonist Peter Hermesdorf aiming to compose a band where interaction and improvisation are the key elements in its own compositions. Ever since the group has been going strong. In '97 the Searing Quartet won an award, awarded by the audience at the Internationale Jazzconcours in Breda. In '01 the band was finalist in the Dutch Jazz Competition. In 2000 Derix won the composition award connected to the VSB Poëzieprijs. His composition made for the poem Tijdopname by C.O. Jellema was performed by Trijntje Oosterhuis and trio Polo de Haas. He also received an honor award by the American Songwriters Network in '01 for his composition Exit Ego. This year Derix composed for the 'Holland in Jazz'-project by Loet van der Lee.
