Until his performance at the 2002 edition of the North Sea Jazz Festival the name Deodato had almost disappeared of all music encyclopedias, so hardly anybody could recall that Deodato was the show name of pianist Eumir Deodato Almeida. It bears testimony of courage to bring the man who was at the cradle of contemporary Brazilian dance music to the Netherlands - and that courage was rewarded with a great concert. Deodato taught himself to play the piano and commanded respect in the sixties as accompanist of Astrud Gilberto. After winning a prize at the Rio de Janeiro song festival for his song Spirit of Summer Deodato emigrated to California in the United States. In the promised land he worked with Roberta Flack, Frank Sinatra, Bette Midler, Björk and Aretha Franklin. As a solo-artist he had a monster hit with an adaptation of the piece Also Sprach Zarathustra by Richard Strauss, which was used by director Stanley Kubrick as a score for the movie 2001: A Space Odyssey. The many fans who have missed his surprising concert last year, will get a second chance this year.
