Kenny Garrett is one of the most thrilling sax players seen in recent years. His performance can be described as intense, straight-ahead hard bop and free jazz, with a dollop of funk and swing. Garrett started his career in the Duke Ellington Orchestra. He truly stood out in the wind section of Art Blakey's Jazz Messengers, though his real international breakthrough came in the eighties as a sax player in the Miles Davis Band. At the festival the man, who has a thorough command of both the alt and the soprano saxophone, will mainly be playing work from his new album Standard of Language, on which he interprets many standards. Garrett does this with the quartet who also accompanied him on his previous album (Happy People) and tour: pianist Vernell Brown, bass player Charnett Moffett and drummer Chris Dave.
