The future looks bright with the new crop of soul artists. The sensual and often autobiographical soul music, mixed with jazz and hip hop influences, keeps finding its way to the more general public. In his music, nu-soul artist Dwele balances on the borderline between R&B, spoken word, jazz and hip hop. The former rapper has just released his debut, titled Subject, which makes plain that this isn't just any old talent. Dwele, who grew up in Detroit, found solace in music after his father died in a shoot-out. He worked as an MC in local clubs and in the meanwhile tried out some songs every so often. When, at one point, he was able to replace a cancelled singer in his favorite club and managed to enthuse the audience, he understood what was to be done and started working on a demo. The rest is history. Dwele has mastered quite a few instruments: trumpet, piano, bass and guitar. But what impresses most are his enormously varied compositions with a sharp 'street' edge.
