Bass player Charlie Haden has worked his way up to the absolute top in jazz. During his long career, 'the poet of the bass' played a role of great importance for the position of the string bass in jazz. Haden made his international breakthrough in 1957 as a bass player in the original Ornette Coleman Quartet. In '69 he made his name with his Liberation Music Orchestra, an album typified by freedom songs like Songs for Che. In 1987 Haden took part in the Ornette Coleman Quartet's reunion tour, while he and the group also recorded the album In All Languages. In that same year, the bass player formed his own group, the Charlie Haden Quartet West. Last year, Haden and Pat Metheny gave a rendition of their beautiful acoustic duet album Beyond the Missouri Sky at the festival. This year the bass player will be performing work off his newest CD American Dreams, his first album with an orchestra.
