By way of promoting his CD 'Soundroots', recorded in New Orleans, tenor sax player and composer Dick de Graaf founded an international quartet by the same name. After three tours with original compositions and jazz and pop standards in special arrangements the Soundroots quartet this year presents the 'Schubert Impressions' project. Mario Venzago, conductor of the Basel Sinfonie Orchester - initiator of a Schubert Festival in Basel and moreover a big jazz fan - commanded De Graaf to adapt Schubert for his quartet. The musician wrote ten pieces that were inspired by Schubert's quartet for strings in C, by three of his songs and by a number of themes from the unfinished symphony. De Graaf produced the result earlier at the Schubert Festival with special guest-cellist Daniel Pezzotti.
