Ron Carter belongs to the major league of bass players. He achieved this status as a result of his solid and professional performance and also through his membership in the Miles Davis band. This classy, elegant bass player has a fabulous feeling for rhythm and melody, which he displays in all kinds of techniques. And not only in jazz, for Carter is as comfortable in classical settings - he has performed with symphony orchestras all over the world. After graduating from high school in the late fifties, Ron Carter moved to New York and found employment in Chico Hamilton's quintet with Eric Dolphy. His first studio work was with Dolphy and Don Ellis. Subsequently he worked with musicians like Randy Weston, Thelonious Monk and Jaki Byard. After a short spell with Art Farmer he became an important member of the Miles Davis Band with Herbie Hancock and Tony Williams and could be heard on many memorable records. Besides his work with Miles Davis he is also known as a member of the VSOP (with, among others, Herbie Hancock and Wayne Shorter). Carter can also be heard as a sideman on an infinite number of records (around 1000, it is said). At this edition of the festival Carter will be performing with pianist Stephen Scott, with whom he made the album Vision Quest in 1998. Scott, who won the National Association of Jazz Educators' Young Talent at seventeen, has recorded scores of mainstream albums for Verve with people like Joe Henderson and Elvin Jones. He also toured with Sonny Rollins on a regular basis.
