Hip hop has been his passion for many years. But jazz as well. These two combined have been keeping trumpet player Russell Gunn under their spell for a decade. With his two CD's Ethnomusicology Vol. 1 en Vol. 2 the 30-year old St. Louis born musician proved that traditions can easily be blown away. His fusion of hardbop and hip hop let this guy stand out that bit more than the average talented neo-bopper on the block. Once he was aspired to become a rapper, but then his school started a jazz band and he learned how to improvise, ' freestyling' the trumpet, so to speak. Before he moved to New York Gunn worked with the Oliver Lake group and blew his horn in Wynton Marsalis' jazz opera Blood On The Fields. Many people know the vibrant player for his great contribution to Buckshot Lefonque, Branford Marsalis' jazz and hip hop fusion-band, where his trumpet competed with hip hop beats and turntables scratching or contrasted with soft lines over a funky beat. Next to the trumpet he also plays the flügelhorn, but he can easily handle keyboards or percussion as well. And his device? “Every song is a study in black music on all different levels.’
