Inspired by playing along with records by DJ Graham B in dance clubs saxophone player Benjamin Herman envisions a 'total package of amusement' when he founds New Cool Collective in 1994. A group of very talented musicians finds one another in a swinging mix of Latin-jazz, soul, salsa and triphop-beats; modern, danceable jazz music modeled after fifties and sixties dance orchestras. New Cool Collective becomes known by their regular appearance on Mondays at dance-cafe Meander. The Big Mondays become a well-visited hip hotspot. People in their twenties and thirties dance themselves into a sweat to the danceable jazztunes, which, in co-operation with DJ Graham B, find their way to a wider audience. In 1996 the band perform at the North Sea Jazz Festival for the first time. At later editions the group becomes one of the bands with the largest audiences at the mainstage of the festival. The NCC has released three albums up until now, and Big which includes guest vocalists Georgie Fame and Trijntje Oosterhuis has been awarded with an Edison. Twice a month the big band performs at nightclub Panama in Amsterdam. This spot serves as a meeting place for special national and international guest musicians. Last year the New Cool Collective won the Heineken Cross Over Award 2001. In May the band traveled through the Netherlands by helicopter, to play at the diverse Liberation Day Festivals. Sony Music will soon release their newest CD.
