As one of the few female drummers young American Terri Lyne Carrington has earned herself a distinguished and worthy place amongst the worldwide top of the rhythm section. As a youngster she performed with giants like Dizzy Gillespie, Oscar Peterson and Clark Terry. Partly because of her steady position as drummer in the Arsenio Hall Show she earned her fame, but that is not all. For the last fifteen years she impressed as accompaniment of top artists including Wayne Shorter, Herbie Hancock, Al Jarreau and David Sanborn, as composer and as producer for vocalist Dianne Reeves (That Day in 1997). On her newest CD Jazz Is A Spirit the drummer explores the borders of jazz together with prominent guest stars like Herbie Hancock, Wallace Roney, Kevin Eubanks and Terence Blanchard. In spite of her impressive career, Jazz Is A Spirit is just her second album. The first one dates from 1989. This year it is the first time Carrington performs under her own name at the festival.
