Four years ago she moved to the United States where she reached the third place in the Thelonious Monk International Jazz Vocal Competition. The Italian vocalist with the beautiful swinging name Roberta Gambarini can frequently be heard in the New York circuit. She sings with T.S. Monk's band, with Roy Hargrove and Larry Willis, with the True Blue All Stars and she has been on stage together with many big names. Gambarini has been North Sea Jazz's guest before, in 2000 in the New Vocals in Jazz program - where she took on the evening with top talents like Kristina Fuchs, Melissa Walker and Susanne Abbuehl - and last year with Hank Jones. She also sang in the Bimhuis with the Jazz Orchestra of the Concertgebouw and with Roy Hargrove and the Cedar Walton Trio in the Concertgebouw. Now she's going to do it in her own name. Marvel at her warm and dusky timbre, with which she can scat well-known solos remarkably subtly.
