Cees Slinger's jazz group The Diamond Five was the best and most famous hard bop-quintet The Netherlands have ever known. But even after the break-up of the 'Diamonds' at the beginning of the sixties Slinger continued to be one of the best bebop-pianists of The Netherlands. He even was awarded with a Bird Award by North Sea Jazz Festival. Tenor saxophone player Ferdinand Povel, co-leader of this talented quartet, has not been in the spotlight enough, according to the real jazz fan. For Povel has always been considered one of the best saxophone players of The Netherlands. This inspired duo will be matched with vocal talent Greetje Kauffeld for this festival. Together with Rita Reys she has striven for many years to lift the quality of female vocal jazz artists to a higher level. Looking at the number of singers in The Netherlands now, one can only conclude that Kauffeld's mission has been completed successfully. And despite all young competitors Kauffeld is still going strong.
