With his CD Tourist French producer St. Germain, a.k.a. Parisian Ludovic Navarre reluctantly became figure-head of the Lounge music-trend. St. Germain, who until that time produced very different kinds of dance music under several aliases with House pioneer Laurent Garnier amongst others, could not believe it when he was offered a contract by Blue Note, of all labels. To him, the electronics-freak, who in the nineties often worked as a producer and re-mixer behind the scenes of French Techno-labels FNAC and F. Communications. But Blue Note recognised talent in the ambitious and self-willed producer, for the Frenchman playfully combines Techno and Ambient music with traditional jazz and blues. Electronic versus acoustic. Something he already did some six years ago, on the album Boulevard. For Tourist St. Germain used old jazz archives and picked vocals and melodies to sample. Like the opening and at the same time hit-song of this album, Rose Rouge, where he sampled vocalist Marlena Shaw: I want you to get together. In another song he uses fragments of trumpet player Miles Davis' and guitarist John Lee Hooker's Harry's Philosophy. On stage St. Germain is a group of eight very groovy people.
