How a band can grow… The Koninklijk Conservatorium Big Band's first performance at North Sea Jazz took place under the awning near the main entrance. The year after, the big band performed in the PWA-hall, conducted by Bob Brookmeyer. And now the band has its own spot as the opening act in the Mondriaan Zaal. The Koninklijk Conservatorium Big Band was started in the late '70s. At the time, the The Hague pianist and arranger Frans Elsen led the orchestra. Since then the big band has been performing with established names including Benny Carter, Rob Pronk, Gerald Wilson, Bob Mitzer, Maria Schneider and Jim McNeely. Last year, this ambitious orchestra played with the German composer, arranger and trombone player Peter Herbolzheimer. This year the conservatory band, which released a CD in 2000, is working with Toots Thielemans's steady partner, the American pianist Kenny Werner. The latter played for a long period of time with Archie Shepp, for whom he took place in the Mel Lewis Band in the 1980s. Apart from his work with the harmonica star, he has been leading his own trio for years.
