Pianist Ayse Tütünçu never loses sight of the music of her native country (Turkey) either. Her Ayse Tütünçu Piano Percussie Group is based on the unusual combination of piano with four percussion instruments and a clarinet, with whom she plays pieces varying from Chick Corea to Carla Bley and Debussy. She steers a middle course between traditional Turkish pieces, folk, klezmer and Kurdish dance music. Her group is one that split off from her first group which she set up in 1983 - Mozaik, with whom Tütünçu made four fusion albums. Besides that she spent a long time in the group Kömür, in which she improvised a lot and performed at clubs. She also worked extensively with famous Turkish musicians including the songwriter Bülent Ortaçgil, the folk group Yeni Türkü and the rock band Bulutsuzluk Özlemi. In the East meets Jazz-program the emphasis is on jazz musicians from the Middle East who have incorporated their roots in their music. Though none of them still live in their native countries, their origin is an important element in their music and their playing. Often this is also these musicians' motive: the possibility of fusing two musical worlds and really also two lives.
