Pianist and composer Cedar Walton has been playing an important role in the international jazz scene for over 30 years. He was born in 1934 in Dallas and knew early on that he wanted to make his living with music. As a teenager he was a local jazz club's regular pianist and was able to accompany famous jazz musicians like Dizzy Gillespie and John Coltrane when they came to his town on their tours. In the late 1950s Walton moved to New York, like so many jazz musicians at the time. There he worked with musicians like Sonny Rollins, Kenny Dorham and J.J. Johnson before joining Art Blakey's The Jazzmessengers, a good learning place for many an instrumentalist. In 1966 the pianist came out with his first solo album Cedar!, after which many followed. Walton is a wizard at playing blues like pieces though he is also fond of angular improvisations.
