Viennese born synthesizer wizard Joe Zawinul formed his Syndicate two years after the breaking up of Weather Report in 1986. The Zawinul Syndicate is an ensemble that focuses on more styles, like for instance world music. The group regularly changes constitution. Earlier the band included bass players Richard Bona and Victor Bailey amongst others, but Zawinul remains the driving force. The keyboard player can be held accountable for numerous albums, but performs everywhere around the world with his band. Live double-CD Joe Zawinul & The Zawinul Syndicate World Tour documents this. It was recorded during three concerts in Germany and can be held as a time-exposure of one of the most vivid live-bands in the world. The man who wrote history with Miles Davis, Cannonball Adderley and his fusion band Weather Report featuring Wayne Shorter travels around the world to play with musicians from other cultures. His band is a collection of kindred spirits from all corners of the earth. Last year he performed at the festival with Portuguese vocalist Maria João. Her flexible voice perfectly matched Zawinul's ecletical manner of playing. Twenty-one times out of the last twenty-two years the musician was voted 'Best Keyboard Player' by Down Beat's 'Critics and Readers Poll'. Weather Report was voted 'Best Band' for fifteen consecutive years in that same poll.
