In 1980 singer Claude McKnight set up the vocal group Gentlemen's Estate Quartet. He named his quartet after the boys' building of Oakwood College in Huntsville, Alabama - the school where he was educated. After many variations in name and line-up, the quartet eventually evolved into a sextet calling itself Take 6. Take 6 is made up of McKnight and Mark Kibble, Cedric Dent, David Thomas, Alvin Chea and Joey Kibble. Take 6 purposely presents itself as a Christian group. In interviews McKnight say he doesn't want to ram the Bible down people's throats. “We have wrapped up the message attractively through our music and we hope people have picked something up after our concerts.” Musical the group counts as one of the most swinging close-harmony groups with a strong influence of R&B. Quincy Jones used the group on his trail-blazing albums Back on the Block and Q's Jook Joint.
