At the foundation in 1991 of the Mingus Big Band by Charlie Mingus' wife Sue, the orchestra had two goals: honoring the music of Charlie Mingus, who deceased in 1979 at the age of 56, and performing on a regular basis. For years the orchestra has a resident night at 'The Fez' under the Time Cafe in New York, serving the second goal. But because the big band travels the world with the works of Mingus and therefore keeps his reputation alive, the first goal is honored as well. No one will deny that bass player, composer and band leader Mingus was of great importance for jazz. The 14-headed Mingus Big Band is composed of a large group of musicians who are on call for special projects. Since the foundation the band has been going its own course and released five albums. Nostalgia in Times Square, Gunslinging Birds, Live in Time, ¡Que Viva Mingus! and Blues and Politics are striking tributes with a creative approach. Mingus classics like 'Haitian Fight Song' and 'Goodbye Pork Pie Hat' are being interpreted in a different way. Recently the compilation album The Essential Mingus Big Band was released, containing works of all five albums.
