Debutant Heleen van den Hombergh is a remarkable newcomer in the jazz scene. With no vocal diplomas, but with years of travel experience in her pocket, she released her first CD a few months ago. Together with her discoverer, pianist Bert van den Brink, who spoke of 'love at first sound' and first took the initiative for this collaboration project, she dove into the studio with double bass player Tony Overwater and percussionist Joshua Samson. The result is Heard in the Scene, a debut album with songs by George Gershwin, Todd Rundgren, Stevie Wonder, Kurt Weill and own compositions. Van den Hombergh possesses a warm low voice, which shows up well in an ensemble with her quartet. Tony Overwater, who won an Edison last year for his homage to Oscar Pettiford, recently did a tour in the Middle East, the influences of which can be heard in pieces like I love you Porgy, Joshua Samson is also in his element in such improvisations. He contributes to the atmosphere and the drive of the group through his choice of rhythm instruments
