Following Maarten Ornstein in 2001, the Dutch pianist and composer Martin Fondse was asked to do the composition assignment this year on the authority of North Sea Jazz in association with the Dutch organisation Jazzdienst. With his composition style Fondse knows how to render a personal and sometimes even humorous story. Since 1992, the year in which his Martin Fondse Oktemble was founded, he developed into one of the most asked composers of the contemporary jazz movement. Fondse was awarded numerous prizes for his compositions, including the Jazz Composers Alliance Boston and the Euro Jazz Big Band Association awards in Paris. The pianist from Bergen op Zoom wrote arrangements for the Orchestra National de Jazz in Paris and Ernst Reijseger last year. He also composed pieces for the jazz programme of trumpet player Eric Vloeimans and the Metropolis Orchestra in the scope of Rotterdam Jazz International. Next to his oktemble, with clarinettist Michael Moore, trumpet player Eric Vloeimans and trumpet player Eric van de Westen, Fondse is conductor of The Groove Troopers, a live-lounge-orchestra of 15 members. For the composition assignment Fondse will perform with an assembly he selected himself.
